Birth Choice hosted Dr. Tony Evans during a fund raising event, Thursday, April 5, at North Side Assembly of God. Dr. Evans, President of The Urban Alternative, spoke on the topic of hope.

Nationally-known evangelist and author Dr. Tony Evans was in Jackson on Thursday speaking at Northside Assembly of God on behalf of Birth Choice, a clinic that helps pregnant women through the pregnancy and birth of the child.

Evans’ speech began with a story of when he and his wife were in New York about to fly home to Dallas on Aug. 14, 2003 when a great blackout that left the entire region of the northeastern United States and southeastern Canada without power.

“Everything was shut down, so we had to go get a hotel room,” Evans said. “It was dark and hot, because the air conditioning was out and we had to take the steps to our room.”

When they got to their room, they opened a window and discovered the hotel across the street had power.

“We could hear music and see all this light in the middle of all this darkness, and we went over there, and I asked the manager how they had power,” Evans said. “It seems when they built that hotel, they built it with gas-powered generators installed so that if something like a blackout happened, they had power within their building no matter what was going on in the circumstances outside the building.”

Evans said Birth Choice has a similar effect spiritually on women who enter their doors.

“They’re coming in during a dark chapter – a possible lost relationship, an unexpected circumstance they didn’t want or ask for, there may be shame or guilt or fear,” Evans said. “It’s certainly a dark point in their lives, but birth choice is a well-lit place in that dark time of their lives.”

Evans discussed a well-known verse in the Bible – Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” Evans said the book of Jeremiah is a book of darkness as the nation of Israel had been taken away into captivity into Babylon, and Chapter 29 had some harsh realities for the people as they were in captivity.

“But the 11th verse is a well-lit verse in a dark chapter of a dark book,” Evans said. “When you see the word ‘hope’ in the Bible, it’s not like how we use that word today like ‘I hope this happens’ or anything like that that could happen and we want it to.

“Hope in the Bible means it will happen, and there’s something to look forward to. Christians have the hope of Heaven after this life. We know that’s going to happen.”

Evans said Birth Choice gives young mothers similar hope.

“There’s a life being created and coming forth, and that life will bring hope with it of something great down the line,” Evans said. “My assistant in Dallas was raped as a teenager and became pregnant and considered abortion, but she eventually chose not to have the child killed in abortion and accepted Jesus Christ a

s her Savior in the process.
