5-year-old boy rescued after falling off kayak in Connecticut River has died, DEEP officials say

A 5-year-old boy who was pulled from the water after a kayaking accident on the Connecticut River last weekend has died, officials said.

 

On Oct. 26, the Connecticut Environmental Conservation Police, Connecticut State Police, Haddam Fire and Haddam Volunteer Ambulance responded to a report of a boating accident involving a kayak with two occupants on the Connecticut River in the area of Depot Hill Road in Haddam, according to the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

 

The boy and an adult man were in a kayak at approximately 3:15 p.m. when they ended up in the water, DEEP officials said.

 

The man refused medical attention, according to DEEP officials. The boy, later identified as Jaxon Podbielski of Higganum, was rushed to Middlesex Hospital and later transferred to Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, where he was originally listed in critical condition. He was pronounced dead on Wednesday, DEEP officials said.

 

According to DEEP officials, the official cause of death has not yet been determined by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
