DONE DEAL : Michael Penix Jr. is now the Vikings 2024 NFL Draft………….
With the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft scheduled on April 25th, Michael Penix Jr. has become quite the talking point. The Heisman Trophy runner-up from the previous season is predicted to be picked in the first round at any point or to go anywhere between the fifth and tenth picks. He remains one of the draft’s unsolved mysteries this year.
But Penix did himself a favor by attending the NFL Combine, as opposed to some of the other quarterbacks who chose to skip it. The former quarterback for the Huskies displayed his arm strength, especially when it came to making deep passes. Among all the quarterbacks who took part at the combine, Penix may have benefited himself the most, according to ESPN’s Jordan Reid.
That does not, however, ensure what teams will choose to do when the 2024 NFL Draft really gets underway. Whether Penix is selected ahead of other highly sought-after quarterbacks like Jayden Daniels or Drake Maye, or if he falls out of the first round entirely, he might easily come as a surprise.
The Minnesota Vikings are one team that shouldn’t pass on Penix, as he might be the solution they require in a position where there is now a huge void. Penix would be ideal for the Vikings for the following reasons:
Had Kirk Cousins not signed with the Vikings in 2018, the team would have been blind to the identity of a franchise quarterback. Sure, the Vikings have a history with Fran Tarkenton, some good years with Daunte Culpepper, and Brett Favre’s last season, but that’s about it. The team hasn’t had much outstanding quarterback play in the years after.
Naturally, Cousins is now with the Atlanta Falcons after the Vikings were unable to reach an agreement with the 35-year-old quarterback. The remaining players are veteran Sam Darnold, who the organization signed in free agency, Jaren Hall, and Nick Mullens. In the event that the Vikings don’t discover their quarterback in this year’s draft, Darnold appears to be a safety net signing.
With their No. 11 pick, the Vikings may be inches away from selecting one of the best quarterbacks in the draft. But the Vikings now have two first-round picks—their No. 11 and their new No. 23 pick—after a trade with the Houston Texans. That might be sufficient to advance on the board and give you the chance to acquire Penix. However, if other teams aren’t as hot on him as the Vikings are, they might also get lucky and grab him at No. 11 or even 23, for that matter.
