_Dallas, TX_ – After a storied coaching career spanning over three decades, Mike McCarthy has announced his retirement from the National Football League. The 59-year-old coach, who has been at the helm of the Dallas Cowboys since 2020, revealed his decision to step away from the game in a statement released by the team.
“It’s with a mix of sadness and gratitude that I announce my retirement from the NFL,” McCarthy said. “I’ve been fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to coach some of the greatest players and teams in the history of the game. I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished, and I’m grateful for the relationships I’ve built along the way.”
McCarthy’s coaching career began in 1987 as a graduate assistant at Fort Hays State University. He quickly worked his way up the ranks, serving as an assistant coach with the Kansas City Chiefs, Green Bay Packers, and San Francisco 49ers before becoming the head coach of the Packers in 2006.
During his 13-year tenure with the Packers, McCarthy led the team to a Super Bowl XLV championship in 2011, as well as six NFC North division titles. He compiled a regular-season record of 125-77-2 and a postseason record of 10-9.
In 2020, McCarthy was hired by the Dallas Cowboys, where he spent three seasons as the team’s head coach. Despite struggling to find consistency, McCarthy led the Cowboys to a 12-5 record and a playoff appearance in 2021.
