Fremantle Coach Backs Amiss Ahead of Crucial Clash Against Collingwood
In the lead-up to the highly anticipated Sir Doug Nicholls Round 11 clash against Collingwood, Fremantle Dockers’ Senior Coach Justin Longmuir has thrown his support behind young key forward Jye Amiss. Despite a mixed performance in Round 10 against Euro-Yroke, where Amiss kicked two goals and five behinds, Longmuir remains confident in the 20-year-old’s goal-kicking prowess and overall development.
Amiss has scored 14.14 for the season so far, and while his accuracy in front of goal was lacking last week, Longmuir praised the match as Amiss’s best performance of the year in terms of overall contribution. “He’s got great confidence in his routine and his ability to kick goals,” Longmuir said. “The last thing you want to do after one poor week in front of goal is throw everything out the window and start fresh.”
Longmuir highlighted that Amiss had identified areas for improvement and successfully executed them during the game. “He identified a few things that he needed to improve on, and he went out and executed it,” Longmuir continued. “It was his best game of the year by a fair way in terms of complete performance.”
For the entirety of the 2023 season, Amiss was remarkably accurate, kicking 40.17. This season, however, has seen him struggle slightly with consistency. Despite this, Longmuir is confident that Amiss will regain his form. “He’s got a great routine and a lot of confidence in it. He’s just had one off week,” Longmuir reassured fans.
Longmuir also commented on the physicality that Amiss has faced from opposition defenders. Praising the young forward for his resilience and ability to adapt, Longmuir noted, “There are opportunities in his game where he can start that physicality. He worked on that during the week last week. He got his opponent off balance a little bit more on the weekend and was able to halve a lot of contests and compete really well.”
Looking forward to Friday night’s clash with Collingwood, Longmuir emphasized the importance of curbing the influence of Collingwood’s dynamic midfielder, Nick Daicos. “I don’t think we can stop him getting the ball, but we want to make sure he isn’t as influential as he has been,” Longmuir said. “With a player like Nick and his ability to cover the ground and get to the right spots, you need to try and limit his influence. We’ve got a few plans in place.”
