Treacy Eyes Off Reigning Premier Challenge

Walyalup key forward Josh Treacy expressed the team’s eagerness and anticipation as they prepare to challenge last year’s premiers, Collingwood, in a highly anticipated Friday night match at Optus Stadium. This encounter is particularly special, as it takes place during the Sir Doug Nicholls Round, celebrating the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander players to the AFL.

Collingwood, despite a shaky start to the season with three consecutive losses, has found its rhythm, winning six of their last seven matches. Treacy acknowledged the challenge ahead but emphasized that facing a formidable opponent like Collingwood is exactly the type of test the team relishes.

“You want to be playing teams when they are up and about like they (Collingwood) are at the moment,” Treacy remarked during his Monday afternoon press conference. “We have a really strong belief inside these four walls that our footy can really hold up against the best. It’s just another opportunity for us to get out, put our best foot forward, and hopefully put out a really good showing.”

Treacy has been one of Walyalup’s standout performers in the first 10 games of the 2024 season. The young key forward has already notched up 20 goals, surpassing his total for the entire previous season by five. His impressive form has been a critical factor in Walyalup’s competitive performances this year.

Reflecting on his success, the 21-year-old credited a meticulous routine and robust support from the Club. “Certainly, I’ve got a lot of confidence, self-belief, and then confidence from the coaches and my teammates in allowing me to back myself and play to my strengths,” Treacy explained. “I have a routine that I’ve figured out that works nicely for me, and fortunately enough it has paid off for me this year when I’ve needed it.”

The upcoming match is not only a significant test for the team but also a celebration of Indigenous culture and contributions to Australian rules football. The Sir Doug Nicholls Round is a fixture of pride for the AFL, and Walyalup’s involvement in this round is deeply meaningful. The Club will don their special Indigenous jumper, which has profound cultural significance and honors the local Indigenous heritage.

Treacy’s optimism is shared by his teammates and the coaching staff. The belief in their game plan and capabilities is strong within the Walyalup camp. This internal confidence, bolstered by a supportive and strategic environment, has been key to their performances so far and will be crucial as they face Collingwood.

“We’re all really looking forward to the game. Playing in front of the Purple Army at Optus Stadium, especially during such an important round, is incredibly motivating,” Treacy added. “We know Collingwood is a strong side, but we’re prepared to give it our all.”

The game is set to be a thrilling encounter, with both teams having much to prove. For Walyalup, it’s an opportunity to cement their place as serious contenders in the league by taking down a top team. For Collingwood, it’s a chance to continue their resurgence and solidify their standing.

In addition to the on-field excitement, the Club’s community initiatives around the Starlight Purple Haze Game, proudly presented by South32, add another layer of significance to this period. The annual event, which aims to raise funds and awareness for the Starlight Children’s Foundation, has already seen remarkable fundraising efforts this year.

As Walyalup prepares for one of their most significant matches of the season, the sense of purpose and determination is palpable. Treacy’s leadership and performance will undoubtedly be pivotal as the team looks to rise to the occasion against Collingwood, in what promises to be an unforgettable night of football and cultural celebration.
