WHAT HEART BREAKING NEWS : the Maple Leafs Lose a Key Players…………….
The Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs faced battle on Saturday night at Scotiabank Arena in a game that was crucial for both teams since it was their last chance to qualify for the playoffs.
Early in the first quarter, Timothy Liljegren, who had just recently returned to the previous eight games, was hit from behind by Joe Veleno and forced to leave the game. He later made a comeback, but things did not appear good for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Most people in the hockey community were perplexed that Veleno only earned a two-minute minor for boarding, since maMitch Marner scored the first goal for the Leafs on the powerplay, their first since joining the lineup four games prior. After returning to the squad, the former fourth overall pick had five assists overall and had scored points in each of his previous four games.
Ilya Samsonov, who stopped just nine of the 13 shots he faced, surprised everyone by staying in the net for the second period. The squad was better off for this strange decision.
When Nick Robertson ignited a comeback by hitting an explosive shot over James Reimer’s glove hand to pull the club within two, the tide would turn. Robertson is still trying to convince Sheldon Keefe that he belongs in the starting lineup because he has scored in four of the previous five games and would have had five goals in that span if it weren’t for a goal that was called back.
